Steve Clarke has admitted his aim was always to lead Scotland directly to Euro 2024 - because he doesn’t want to face the stress of another nail biting play-off.Clarke’s side cemented its status as the biggest surprise package in Europe on Friday night by romping to a 3-0 win in Cyprus and rattling off a fifth straight Group A victory.
The result leaves the Scots nine points clear of top seeds Spain and a whopping 11 ahead of Erling Halaand’s Norway as they race towards next summer’s finals in Germany, having only scraped into the last tournament four years ago through the sidedoor of the Nations League.
And Clarke had told for the first time how he set out from the start to avoid having to go through that ordeal again. Scotland’s place at a second successive Euros will be confirmed tomorrow night if Georgie draw in Norway - while Clarke and his players take on England at Hampden.
And the manager said: “We don’t want to have to go through the play-offs again.“We don’t want that gamble, that Russian roulette, that risk of going into a play-off game.
