Giant 55ft whale dies after washing up on beach

A huge whale has tragically died after washing up on a beach, despite rescuers' best efforts. The astonishing 55ft mammal, believed to be a male fin whale, was left stranded on the Bridlington, East Yorks beach at around 1pm on Tuesday.

A large cordon had been placed while crowds of onlookers gathered on the shoreline to catch sight of the sea creature. Members of British Divers Marine Life Rescue attempted to save the whale, however, it was pronounced dead at around 6pm.

A spokesperson from the HM Coastguard confirmed their teams offered assistance during the operation to help get the mammal back into the water. Read more: Join the FREE Manchester Evening News WhatsApp community They said: "We can confirm that HM Coastguard officers are in attendance at the scene of a stranded whale off Belvedere near Bridlington beach.

We were called today at 1.15 pm and are there to provide assistance." Locals have been warned not to go near the whale's carcass as it is currently unknown what caused the animal's death.
