the open ocean race from Perth's Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island, they did so in record time; slashing three minutes off the race record to come home in the insane time of three hours, 33 minutes and 49 seconds.
Simpson said despite the gruelling nature of swimming such a huge distance in open ocean - a far cry from a 50m pool - the boys had a blast. 'I think for all of us it was our first time … and we came in with high spirits,' Simpson said after the race, which attracted more than 2500 entrants. 'We were trying to crack jokes and keep it light the whole time. 'The La Da Dee singer revealed prior to the race the so-called 'boys trip' was just for a 'bit of fun', with the four swimmers all teammates on the Gold Coast.
They competed under the decidedly unimaginative team name of GUSC, much to the chagrin of a bemused Horton. 'It's a pretty crappy name, Josh (Edwards-Smith) put it in.
He thought we were gonna change it,' he laughed to Mix94. 5 Perth. 'My favourite team name idea was Cody Shrimpsons. 'It was great fun, it was one of the coolest swimming events I've ever done,' Horton said at the finish line.
