The Canary Islands are facing imminent 'collapse' due to the influx of tourists flooding the holiday hotspot, experts have warned.
Canary Islands such as Tenerife and Lanzarote are well-loved by Brits searching for all year round sunshine but it appears to be having a devastating effect from over-tourism, the Mirror reports.Urban planners have said that tourism numbers must be reduced as its infrastructure is under enormous strain which is no longer sustainable.Campaign group Ben Magec-Ecologists in Action have spoken out after tourist figures for 2023 revealed a record number of visitors - 48 million.
By one estimate, as many as half of these are Brits.A report read: "The Canary Islands territory was more than overexploited.
We had exceeded the carrying capacity of the territory by seven times, resulting in a scenario of systemic collapse due to the urban development structure."Locals are now beginning to push back on the influx of visitors.
