Rapper Wiley forfeits MBE for 'bringing honours system into disrepute'

Wiley has lost his MBE for 'disgracing the honours system'. The British grime rapper was previously honoured for his services to music in the December 2017 New Year Honours list, but has now had the honour taken away from him, according to a list published on the Cabinet Office website.At the time, Wiley, whose birth name is Richard Kylea Cowie Jr, said he was "honoured to be receiving an MBE" as he told the PA news agency: "It feels like the school grade I wanted and didn’t get but now I’m finally there."After receiving the award for his music, Wiley took to social media to say: "Big up the Queen".However, he appeared to have a change of heart about his achievement back in 2020 when the 45-year-old claimed he didn't care about the honour, the Mirror reports.His comments came after finding himself at the centre of a racism storm following some anti-Semitic tweets that saw him removed from Twitter and dropped by his management.

Speaking in a Sky News interview in July 2020, Wiley called for his MBE to be taken away. He said: "I'm not racist, you know.

I'm a businessman." When pressed about his anti-Semitic remarks, he hit back: "Do I see why that could be thought of as racism? "If I read what anti-Semitism is and it says the Jewish community is powerful in business, that's racist?

I think that's silly. I don't care what nobody says. "I wanna apologise for generalising, number one, and I want to apologise for comments that were looked at as anti-Semitic." When confronted by demands for his MBE to be taken away, the British rapper responded: "Take it back!
