'Beered-up thugs' were behind the violent scenes that broke out on the streets of Southport last night, the MP for the town has said.

Patrick Hurley, the Labour MP for Southport, said that those involved in the riots with Merseyside Police officers 'utterly disrespected' the families of the victims who were killed in the brutal stabbing at a school holiday dance event on Monday.

He said people had 'got the train in' to the Merseyside town 'intent on causing trouble'. He added that those who threw bricks towards a mosque following a vigil used the incident 'for their own political purposes'.

Mr Hurley spoke this morning after a night of terror and violence for residents, as chaotic scenes unfolded close to the scene of the fatal stabbing on Hart Street.
