A walker died after suffering a 'medical emergency' near the summit of England's highest mountain. The man fell ill while hiking on Scafell Pike in the Lake District on Wednesday.
Mountain rescue teams and the air ambulance were called, but sadly the man died at the scene. Members of Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) said they were alerted by both North West Ambulance and Cumbria Police shortly before 4pm.
An 'immediate callout' was made along with requests for air support due to the position of the casualty 'high up' the mountain.
WMRT said the condition of the walker 'worsened' while help was en-route and despite desperate attempts from passing walkers and helicopter crews, the man 'tragically did not survive'.
