Scripts for the upcoming sixth and final season of The Crown had to be rewritten after Gillian Anderson was unable to return in her role as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a source has claimed. The American actress, 54, received huge plaudits from critics and the public alike for her portrayal of the polarising politician, earning an Emmy and a Golden Globe in the process.

But despite the best efforts of producers, Gillian will reportedly not be returning to her role, with an insider source saying the star has scheduling conflicts which left her unable to film for the hit Netflix show.

It is alleged that scriptwriters had written Maggie Thatcher back into the show for an episode covering Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's golden wedding anniversary, which would have seen Gillian reprise her role as the Iron Lady.

Speaking to The Sun, a TV source said that producers hoped to get Gillian back in her role for the episode, but this has since been rewritten. They said: “It had been hoped she would be able to make an appearance in scenes around the golden wedding [anniversary] but sadly that has not been the case due to scheduling issues. “As ever with the series, clever scripting will mean viewers will be none the wiser."
