Though the advent of streaming has given consumers the ability to choose when they want to watch their video favorites, the hours of 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., still known as “primetime” in the TV industry remain a choice period to reach potential customers. These hours are viewed as a block when consumers are no longer occupied by work and in a relaxed state — open, so the thinking goes, to commercial pitches. In a different era, they could be reached easily by traditional commercials via broadcast and cable. Increasingly, however, they can now be found hunting for something good to stream at moments of their own determination.

South Asian films have almost never had theatrical rereleases due to satellite and streaming rights being assigned post the standard window after their theatrical releases. Six months after its theatrical debut, “The Legend of Maula Jatt” will rerelease across 15 sites in the U.K., seven sites in the U.S. and two sites in the U.A.E. on April 21, in the Eid holiday frame. To date, the film has amassed $13.8 million worldwide on 500 screens, making it the highest grossing Pakistan-made and Punjabi-language film to date and the top South Asian film in the U.K. from 2018 to 2022. It grossed more than five times Pakistan’s previous box office champion, “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2.”

Meddour’s follow up to her Cesar-winning feature debut “Papicha,” “Houria” is still playing in theaters in France and was recently boarded by “CODA” Star Troy Kotsur who is now executive producer on the movie. Kotsur made history last year as the first Deaf man to take home an acting award at the Oscars.  The initiative, which is being engineered by the film’s producers Ink Connection and High Sea, as well as the banners MADworld and Lumiere, will allow for the creation of a series of NFT’s focusing on “Houria”‘s central themes — sign language and dance. Powered by blockchain technology, a portion of the NFT proceeds will be donated to the Paris-based non-profit org Femmes Sourdes Citoyennes et Solidaires (United Deaf Women Citizens).
