Staff at a shop in West Dunbartonshire have described the "frightening" moment they were held at knife point during an early morning robbery on Saturday.

The suspect was waiting outside Scotmid on Tullichewan Drive, Alexandria, when staff opened the doors at 7am, before brandishing a knife at workers.

Nobody was injured during the incident however police say a three-figure sum of cash was taken. Emma McSaimning, a staff member at Scotmid, told the Record two male colleagues were in the store when the incident took place.

She said: "We are all ok but it was very frightening. The man was standing waiting when staff opened up in the morning."When he came in he held a knife but I didn't think he intended to hurt anyone, he seemed to be more frightened than anyone else."Thankfully the store was completely empty and no one else was there, but it was quite shocking."The Post Office was not yet open in the store so thankfully there was not a lot of cash that could be taken." A Police Scotland spokesperson has confirmed enquiries are ongoing.
