A member of Keir Starmer’s shadow Cabinet has said a Labour Government needs to find the money to scrap the two child benefits cap.Ian Murray said everyone in Labour agrees the Tory policy is “dreadful” and affects people who need support.Starmer is under pressure after saying he would not axe a cap that limits some means-tested benefits to the first two children.Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar distanced himself from the position by saying he would “press” a Labour Government to scrap it.Murray, who is Starmer's shadow Scotland Secretary, has given a clear steer Labour would like to abolish the curb if the money is there. He told the BBC: “The bottom line is that we all agree that this is a dreadful policy and we all agree that it's affecting people that we should be supporting.“We need to find and identify, and do everything we can, to identify the money that we can pay for it and have a plan to deliver it.”He added: “But we've got to be credible in terms of the economy, because we can see from what's happened over the last few months if you lose control of the economy it's working people that pay.“You've got to identify a process of what your child poverty reduction strategy is going to look like.

And each individual policy will contribute towards that.”Asked whether Starmer or Sarwar was right, he replied: “They're both right.”“Anas has said he's going to press for it to be scrapped and Keir is saying 'let's just see where we get to in terms of a plan to deliver a reduction in child poverty'.
