Andy Burnham has called on Sir Keir Starmer to review the controversial two-child benefit cap if Labour wins the next General Election.
Sir Keir has faced fierce criticism from within his own party after saying he wouldn't scrap the controversial policy. The cap, which prevents parents from claiming child tax credit or universal credit for more than two children, has been widely criticised as unfair, cruel and ineffective, and one of the biggest drivers of child poverty.
But on Sunday Sir Keir confirmed Labour would not change it if winning power due to financial constraints. Today (Tuesday) Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham urged him to rethink that stance. Speaking on Tonight with Andrew Marr on LBC, Mr Burnham said 'in an ideal world' the cap should be scrapped.
But he added: "It is challenging for any Labour opposition, and you need to recognise that there is a requirement for discipline.
