Keir Starmer urged to 'think again' on benefit cap by Scots children's charity

Keir Starmer has been urged to "think again" by a leading Scottish children's charity over his refusal to commit to scrapping the two-child cap on benefits.Aberlour chief executive SallyAnn Kelly said it was clear the only thing the policy had achieved was pushing families "deeper into poverty".In an open letter to the Labour leader, she urged him to "hear the voices of those furthest away from power and privilege".It comes after Starmer used a BBC interview last weekend to rule out scrapping the two-child cap, which limits how many children per family can receive means-tested benefits.The policy was introduced by former Tory chancellor George Osborne and has been repeatedly opposed by numerous Labour MPs and MSPs since.But Starmer has argued he cannot make uncosted spending commitments on what he would do if he becomes the next prime minister given the state of the UK economy.In her letter, Kelly said: "Our mission is to work together to beat poverty and discrimination.

I believe we share the same values of equality and social justice and the ambition to see an end to child poverty."I am compelled to reach out to you to urge you to think again on the two-child limit."I ask you to look at the evidence and hear the voices of those furthest away from power and privilege about the difference ending this policy would make to our poorest children and families."Evidence published just this week by the Nuffield Foundation shows that this policy has directly contributed to rising child poverty over the last decade.
