A Scots mum trusted her instincts when her daughter's flu symptoms turned out to be life-threatening liver failure.Evie Buckham, now four-years-old, was rushed into A&E at the Sick Kids in December 2021 after her parents noticed her developing 'flu-like symptoms' including a cough, fever and jaundice.Terrified mum Marnie, was then told the devastating news her daughter's kidneys were failing.

Evie also developed pneumonia, and five different respiratory viral infections leading to her right lung not working properly. The brave tot was put into an induced coma on December 9 so they could perform dialysis before having two weeks of intense renal replacement therapy at the RHCYP, then was transferred to Glasgow for further treatment before being diagnosed with haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS).

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Marnie said: "From day-to-day, we had no idea what was happening. My thought process was crazy and your mind just goes to the worst-case scenario straight away. "I just had a gut feeling that something was wrong as soon as she started showing the flu-like symptoms.

She wouldn't eat and was just drinking water constantly. She was in a coma for around five weeks altogether."It was traumatising for us.
