Scots lose almost £2billion in wages in just one year due to working unpaid overtime

Scots have lost a massive £1.9billion in wages in just one year due to working unpaid overtime. Figures show workers completed an average of 8.1 hours of unpaid ­overtime every week.

If each hour was paid at the average hourly pay rate, the staff would be entitled to almost £2billion extra.The average hourly pay for private sector staff last April was £13.49, while public sector workers received £17.71.

Some 80million hours of unpaid overtime was carried out in the private sector in 2021, while 50million was from public sector workers.It works out at 130million hours of unpaid overtime in the figures uncovered by Scottish Labour.

Extra working hours increased since 2020, when there were 100million hours worked and an average of 7.7 hours a week.Labour finance spokesman Daniel Johnson said: “Scotland’s workers are the lifeblood of our economy but these statistics plainly show that they are missing out on a fair day’s pay.
