A Scottish Championship footballer was found drunkenly parked in his car by police after picking up a trophy at his club’s end of season awards dinner.

Joao Balde was found in the early hours of the morning after being voted Arbroath’s best new player by the club’s supporters.Dundee Sheriff Court was told yesterday that ex-Hibs player Balde was smelling strongly of alcohol when officers opened his car to speak to him.Fiscal depute Kate Scarborough told the court that police saw the car parked on Kingsway in Dundee at 2am and decided to approach the occupant. She said the ignition was not running at the time, but Balde smelled of alcohol, and failed a roadside breath test which showed he was over the legal limit.Balde, 22, from Edinburgh, admitted being drunk in charge of his vehicle.

He told the court he had broken down, was banned from driving for a year and fined £450.Earlier that night he won The Angus Nairn Trophy for the best Club New-comer, at the Carnoustie Golf and Spa Hotel.Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the Daily Record team. All you have to do is click here if you're on mobile, select 'Join Community' and you're in!If you're on a desktop, simply scan the QR code above with your phone and click 'Join Community'.We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
