Riot police were subjected to a relentless and 'sickening' attack, with vans set alight and wheelie bins hurled at officers in a night of chaos and disorder in Southport.

Swathes of protestors, many armed with bricks and bottles, launched an attack on police who were called to St Luke’s Road following a nearby mosque being targeted by suspected English Defence League supporters.

The violence came just after huge crowds of mourners had gathered together to remember the lives of three innocent children killed in the brutal stabbing rampage at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party on Monday morning (July 29).
