A police officer has suffered 'life-changing' injuries after being hit by a train while attempting to save a man's life near Newark-on-Trent.

The Nottinghamshire Police officer has been taken to hospital and is in a critical condition, according to police. Officers were called to the village of Balderton at around 7pm on Thursday (August 24) over concerns for a man's safety, Nottinghamshire Live reports.

The police officer was hit by a train as he attempted to help the man, who was on the train tracks. Both men were taken to Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham for treatment.
