Detectives have been given more time to question Constance Marten and Mark Gordon as the remains of a baby were found close to the scene of their arrest.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of child neglect in Brighton on Monday after being missing for more than seven weeks. They were initially held on suspicion of child neglect before being further arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter the following day.

Police said earlier today that they were seeking a 36 hour-extension to their detention. And they tonight confirmed that the request had been granted by Brighton Magistrates court. After a car belonging to Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, was found on fire abandoned next to the M61 in Bolton on January 5, police began a lengthy search for the couple.
