Police have hit out after a 'mindless' thug smashed a patrol car window while officers were helping an elderly man injured in a fall.

The vandalism took place at Empress Court in Old Trafford on Friday night. It meant the car had to be taken off patrol and prevented the officer from attending other incidents.

In message on Facebook Trafford police expressed their anger at the incident. It read: "When they handed the care of the male to our colleagues from the ambulance service, returning to their car they discovered some kind soul had smashed the windscreen.
