Mountain rescue team saves lost walkers attempting dangerous trek to take selfies

A group of ramblers had to be rescued after becoming lost on a treacherous walking route which has become increasingly popular among Instagrammers keen to take selfies with a spectacular three-pronged gritstone pillar known as the Trinnacle The group called Greater Manchester Police after losing their way on the 'Trinnacle Trail', an eight-kilometre circular route above Dovestones reservoir.

A mountain rescue team was scrambled and eventually located the lost walkers at Middle Edge Moss - some were escorted back down to safety on foot while the others were taken in a helicopter. The two-and-a-half hour rescue prompted a warning for walkers to be wary of the 'potential risks that may be encountered' on the route, which requires people to scramble along rocks in parts.

The drama started at about 6pm on Saturday when the walkers called GMP and the force alerted Oldham Mountain Rescue Team. Some were walked down to safety while others were rescued by the police helicopter.

In a post about the incident on their Facebook page, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said: "After establishing they were ok, but cold, the group were both flown and walked down to the vehicles for a more thorough check; then returned to our base for a brew, biscuits and a warm up." The post highlighted the increasing popularity of the trail as people attempt to visit a stunning three-pronged gritstone pillar known as the Trinnacle which gives the circular walk its name.
