The crash, which involved four HGVs and a tanker, caused the motorway to be closed off for a number of hours as police, fire crews and paramedics worked at the scene.
Drivers were urged to avoid the M6 between junctions 18 and 19 near Knutsford. Queues of up to 14 miles grew throughout the day amid the major recovery operation. He sustained serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The motorway was closed throughout the morning as the lorries were recovered from the scene.
