The risk of dementia in people with eyesight problems is 'much higher', according to a new study.Losing the ability to see is one of the most preventable health issues as we get older.
What's more, a link between vision issues and dementia is being strengthened by a growing number of studies.A new study lends further weight to the idea as researchers have found the risk of dementia was higher among people with eyesight problems.
It found older adults with moderate to severe distance vision issues were 72 per cent more likely than those with no vision issues to have dementia.Published in the medical journal JAMA Ophthalmology the study examined data from 3,000 older adults who took vision tests and cognitive tests during home visits. All of the older adults in the study were over the age of 71 with an average age of 77.
Participants were tested on their up-close and distance vision, as well as their ability to see letters that did not contrast strongly with their background. They also took tests of memory and thinking ability and provided health information including any existing diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.
