A dentist has warned of potential tooth discolouration if people make a simple mistake while brushing their pearly whites. It's a well-known fact that your teeth should be cleaned at least twice a day, in the morning and in the evening before you go to bed.The Mirror reports that we've also been taught to brush our teeth for a total of two minutes with sufficient toothpaste - but there is another "essential" step people can miss.

An expert has shared the reason why it is so important that people wet their toothbrush before squirting the toothpaste on.Dr Payal Bhalla, Lead Dentist and Clinical Director of Quest Dental, said that you can "reduce the risk of irritation or damage" to your mouth if you wet your toothbrush, compared to a dry one.The expert said: "Wetting your toothbrush before brushing your teeth is essential for several reasons.

Firstly, wetting the bristles helps distribute toothpaste more effectively, ensuring better coverage across the tooth surfaces.

This results in enhanced cleaning efficiency and more thorough removal of plaque and debris."Secondly, wetting the toothbrush softens the bristles, making the brushing experience gentler on gums and tooth enamel, reducing the risk of irritation or damage.
