With the English Lionesses facing off against the Spanish team during today's Women's World Cup final the Neil Diamond hit Sweet Caroline will likely be heard all across the country. The song, which was released in 1969, has recently become associated with football, rising to prominence as a football song in 2021 when the men’s team reached the final of the Euros.
It was then heard again when the women's team won the Women’s Euro 2022 at Wembley Stadium. And has since become synonymous with the England teams.
But how has this song, which first came decades ago now become associated with football? Before becoming a football song, Sweet Caroline became associated with baseball in the US, and the Boston Red Soxs have played it at every home match since 1997.
It's believed that the song was played at the team's home stadium Fenway Park, after a member of staff welcomed a baby daughter called Caroline - with the stadium DJ then playing the song at a game in tribute to the new arrival.
