A huge 1980s star was killed when their rented car was involved in a catastrophic collision with a bus. Falco, best known for his huge hit Rock Me Amadeus, was just 40 years old when his flame was extinguished forever, an incredible 36 years ago.The Austrian-born singer and musician, whose original name was Johann Holzel, was leaving an entertainment complex back in February 1998 and pulling onto the highway near Puerto Plata, a popular Caribbean holiday spot, when his Mitsubishi sport-utility vehicle was hit by a small bus.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but sadly died. Officials later revealed that he'd sustained a severe head injury, and that his left leg was broken by the impact of the horror smash.

He was alone at the time of the incident, and nobody else was injured. At the time, the tragic accident went largely unnoticed in the English-speaking world, but in Vienna fans went into mourning over the death of the biggest star to emerge from Austria since the legendary composer Amadeus Mozart.

Falco first made a name for himself with the single Der Kommissar, known by some for being a song about youthful rebellion, but almost impossible to understand by non-German speakers.
