A man has revealed he has 'lost everything' after taking on an ambitious project which featured on Grand Designs. Edward Short set out to build his dream home, Chesil Cliff House in Devon, which was originally estimated to cost £1.8 million with a completion timeline of 18 months.

But the challenging property ended up costing a fortune, leading to the breakdown of Edward's marriage and leaving him crippled in millions of debt.

What turned into a tragic 12-year ordeal has since been dubbed the 'saddest ever' episode of the Channel 4 show. Edward has now devastatingly admitted that he has 'lost everything' investing in his Grand Designs project, revealing that the debt from creating his lighthouse-style home exceeds "a lot higher than £5.25m". He's now aiming to raise £2 million to fix a deteriorating driveway, which he believes is crucial for selling the house, reports Devon Live. "Mentally I already know I've lost everything I put into the house so it would have to be a miracle upon miracles but the only exit plan, in my opinion, is to build a new entrance.

Without that I don't think it will sell," Edward admitted. Throughout the challenging process of developing the property, Edward came to a significant realisation.
