For almost a century, exactly 100 convicted criminals were hanged in Manchester at Strangeways Prison. The last execution at the prison, and in England, took place in 1964 - almost 60-years ago.
And while the number of people executed for their crimes had reduced dramatically shortly before capital punishment was abolished, offenders were executed frequently.
Many had not even committed serious crimes such as murder or rape, but some for minor offences like pick-pocketing. The noose became the standard method for ending the lives of criminals but, in the 18th Century, there were gruesome instances of children being killed, and women not only hanged but burned at the stake.
Records show public executions of criminals from Greater Manchester as far back at 1735 were carried out on Lancashire Moor, and later Lancaster Castle.
