Ex-Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has been found not guilty of headbutting his ex-girlfriend and subjecting her to controlling and coercive behaviour.

Giggs, 48, was cleared of all charges after Kate Greville withdrew her co-operation from the case ahead of a scheduled re-trial in two weeks' time.

Giggs had faced up to five years in jail if convicted. Jurors failed to agree on their verdicts following a trial held last August.During a hearing on Tuesday, he was cleared of controlling and coercive behaviour, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

Giggs was not in court when the decision was announced. Judge Hilary Manley ordered not guilty verdicts to be entered. Prosecutors alleged that Giggs, who won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and four FA Cups during a glittering 24 year career, had subjected PR executive Greville to a 'litany of abuse, both physical and psychological'.
