Humza Yousaf’s cousin had his finger severed in a horrific attack organised from behind bars on a prison-issued mobile phone.
The incident is understood to have been a botched gangland hit in which the First Minister’s innocent relative was mistakenly targeted.
During the attack he was taken into a property where thugs hacked off one of his fingers.Detectives later traced the hit back to a call made by a criminal on a controversial Scottish Prison Service (SPS) issued mobile phone.The intended target is believed to have been an individual who lived in a neighbouring property.
Mobiles were given to prisoners in 2020 when Yousaf was justice secretary at a time when jail visiting had been severely restricted as a result of lockdown.The devices were supposed to be heavily restricted and “unhackable” but convicts are believed to have worked out how to break in to the casing and insert their own sim cards within hours.A source said: “This was a horrific attack which appears to have been a case of mistaken identity.
