English ivy, with its capacity to harm fences and walls, becomes a real nuisance when growing into cracks or joints, potentially leading to structural damage.Gardening expert Gena Lorainne of Fantastic Services advises homeowners battling with invasive ivy to take measures to eliminate it should it become problematic. She explicates that the "best way" to get rid of the tenacious climber is by severing the stem using a sharp saw, followed by digging out its roots.Detailing the removal process, Gena said: "Once the foliage has died, you can carefully remove the stuck-on stems with a wire brush.

If it covers the ground, dig it up with a mattock or fork and dispose of it elsewhere." For areas where replanting isn't needed, she suggests cutting back the ivy's top growth, then covering the area with weed-control fabric and adding a thick layer of mulch ranging from 10cm to 15cm, reports the Express.

When opting for chemical solutions, there's the option to use glyphosate-based weed killer; however, such a powerful solution demands caution as it will destroy any plant it contacts. On its application, Gena added: "Spray lightly so the weedkiller does not drop off the leaves, or even better, crush and damage the leaves before spraying so they can absorb more weedkiller."Persistence is key since it may require multiple applications over weeks to fully eliminate the ivy.

For those seeking a greener approach, Gena suggested concocting a "homemade" mix.Recommending the eco-friendly alternative, she advised: "Pour 80 percent water and 20 percent vinegar into a container.
