For five years, Johan van Rumst played the role of engineer’s assistant as Philippe Clement constructed his trophy-winning machine in Belgium.Together they provided the spark that generated three consecutive league titles at first Genk and then Club Brugge.

He was by the big Belgian’s side when their blueprint for success helped motor Monaco into the Champions League. It was only family circumstances that prevented the 46-year-old coach from making the move to Glasgow where Clement set about repairing Rangers’ clapped out line-up.But van Rumst has made sure to keep a close eye on his old partner’s progress in Scotland.
