Cape Town ball will celebrate the legacy of Kewpie
mambaonline.comThe inaugural annual Salon Kewpie: The Legacy Ball in Cape Town, in collaboration with the District Six Museum and GALA Queer Archive, will honour the life of queer icon, Kewpie, who passed away in 2012. Hosted by international house mother, Cheshire Vineyard the event will present and connect the spirit of ballroom with the themes revealed in the rich historical photographic collection that captures the life of Kewpie, a queer icon from the Apartheid era, who has come to be known as the Daughter of District Six.
Salon Kewpie: The Legacy Ball will be held on 11 March 2023 at the Homecoming Centre in District Six. Long since scattered, District Six is remembered for its unique spirit of place.
This was a society that valued diversity and had a thriving and beloved queer community despite prevailing governmental oppression.
The organisers say that one of the aims of the event is “to present and educate on the tradition of ballroom — a primary driver of queer culture which arose as a safe place for queer people of colour from disadvantaged backgrounds to engage in radical self-expression”.
