Borgue Primary to hold special celebration ahead of being mothballed
dailyrecord.co.ukBorgue Primary School is to hold a special celebration next month in what could be the last ever involving its pupils. The school will be mothballed at the summer holidays after being a feature of village life for more that 200 years.
Parents took the difficult decision to ask the council to take the action because of plummeting pupil numbers. But on June 21 Borgue will open its doors to all to visit – and join the school community for one last party.
The event in the school grounds will feature a picnic in the community garden, which will remain open for the future. Parent council chairperson, Laura Moodie, said: “Following the very difficult and sad decision to mothball, we want to celebrate the wonderful education Borgue School has provided over more than 200 years. “We hope many of the school’s former pupils will drop in to say hello and bring their picnic blankets to join us on the school playing field and in the community garden.” Previous staff and pupils are also invited to submit memories about the school for a display alongside items from the school’s archive.
Seven years ago the roll at Borgue stood at more than 30, but numbers dropped to 12 for session 2023-24. Next year only nine children were due to be enrolled as demographic change continues to shrink the school-age population.
