Boost for budding Johnstone footballers as new goals installed in Spateston
dailyrecord.co.ukBudding footballers will be dusting off their shooting boots to test out the new goals at Spateston Park in Johnstone. The sparkling equipment was installed after being chosen as part of the YouDecide campaign, Renfrewshire Council’s participatory budget initiative.
Members of the public voted for the old set, which had become run-down and damaged over a number of years, to be replaced. The much-needed substitution has been welcomed by Councillor Andy Steel, the SNP representative for Johnstone South and Elderslie, who conceded the change was well overdue.
He said: “It’s excellent news for Spateston and, to be honest, a long time coming.“Credit has to go to the community groups and residents who drummed up the support for this project, especially Spateston Community Development Trust.
I admit to being cynical about the YouDecide project – I didn’t think people would be interested. I couldn’t have been more wrong.”However, Councillor Steel doesn’t expect to be hitting the back of the net any time soon as he assessed his own ability in front of goal.
