BBC 'shocked' as broadcaster issues statement after Huw Edwards' guilty plea

The BBC has said that Huw Edwards would have been sacked had he been charged over accessing indecent images while still working for the corporation.

A statement, issued by the broadcaster on Wednesday (July 31) said it was 'shocked' at his 'abhorrent behaviour'. The presenter admitted to accessing indecent photos of children as young as seven after chatting to a man he met online.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told seven of the 41 indecent images sent to the veteran broadcaster by the unnamed male were of the most serious type. He admitted to having images of minors he had been sent via Whatsapp. The final indecent image was sent in August 2021, a category A film featuring a young boy, with the man he met online telling the newsreader the child was 'quite young looking' and that he had more images which were illegal.
