SIR Andy Murray said an emotional farewell to tennis on Thursday night as he played his last ever match at the Paris Olympics.The British fans turned out in force, in Union flags hats, headbands and waving flags, in a bid to keep his dream alive.But it was not to be.

Instead, the man who made history by becoming our first Wimbledon champion in 77 years took his final bow.And his fans paid tribute with a standing ovation here.

There was one last hug, too, from doubles partner Dan Evans after the defeat in the quarter final against Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul of the US.The writing was on the wall as the Brits were 4-0 down after 16 minutes to the No 3 seeds, losing the first set 6-2.They lost the second set 6-4 despite punching the air as they broke back against the American No 3 seeds.They went down fighting, with Andy raising his arms and encouraging their cheers in one last stand in the final set.International Tennis Federation president David Haggerty suggested it may not be goodbye, so much as au revoir.He believes that Sir Andy will be back to help future generations.“His love of tennis will see him continue to be involved in helping to grow and develop our sport globally,” he said.But we will never see him grace the Centre Court of Wimbledon again, scene of his greatest triumphs.For the man who wore his heart on his sleeve, winning over the nation after his tears in the 2012 Wimbledon defeat, Paris 2024 was another emotional rollercoaster after two great comeback victories.British No 1 Draper, 22, Paris room mate of Dan Evans, described Murray as an ‘inspiration’ who had been a guiding light for him and other young British players.“He is so modest, and always has time for you off the court,” he said. “He has done so
