New mums like Sarah Thompson spend those precious first 24 hours creating an incredible bond with their baby. But for this mum and daughter, that was not possible - little Tallulah had to be rushed to the neonatal intensive care (NICU) unit to keep her alive.

Within hours of giving birth, Sarah already knew her baby, Tallulah, was in trouble as she was struggling with low blood sugar.

But the mum had no idea how serious until the moment she walked into the intensive care unit where he baby was being treated, and it was revealed that the little one was suspected to have an extremely rare genetic condition.

Miraculously, that intensive care unit in Manchester's Saint Mary's Hospital just so happened to be one of only six places in the world where there was immediate access to a life-saving scan that could help cure her. “I didn’t realise there was something serious about her condition until I walked into NICU and saw a group of doctors gathered around her cot,” Sarah said.
