Warning to Paisley and Renfrewshire motorists over increasing number of catalytic converter thefts

Renfrewshire is currently undergoing a wave of catalytic converter thefts. Police in the area say there has been an increase in the number of such incidents – and has issued a warning to the public.

The exhaust emission control devices convert toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants.

They contain precious metals such as rhodium, platinum, and palladium which makes them attractive to thieves. Police say that hybrid vehicles are more sought-after because they have two power sources, therefore, the converter is used less frequently and the metals less corroded.

Also, van owners and SUV owners should be particularly wary because of their vehicles’ high clearance – which makes it easier for the crooks to get at the catalytic converter.
