Holidaymakers arriving in the Greek Islands of Sanatorini and Mykonos by cruise ship could face fees of up to 20 euros in a bid to tackle overtourism.
The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis discussed the issue on Sunday saying that cruise ships have “burdened” the islands.
Greece plans to impose the levy during the peak summer season. It’s not the first European destination to introduce charges for tourists during busy periods; earlier this year Venice launched a five euro entrance fee in April for peak days.
It comes as popular holiday destinations struggle to cope with increasing numbers of visitors, which put pressure on local infrastructure.
