The broadcasting world is mourning the loss of a true icon as tributes pour in for Downtown Radio's legendary presenter Candy Devine, who has passed away at the age of 85.
A pioneering voice on the air, Candy became one of the first presenters when the station launched back in 1976 and quickly became a beloved figure in Northern Ireland, remaining in our hearts until her retirement in 2013.
Her immense contribution to broadcasting and community service in Northern Ireland was recognised with an MBE in 2014. After the sad passing of her husband Donald in 2012, Candy made the heartfelt decision to move back to her native Australia to be close to her sons Ian and Alastair.
Paying a moving tribute to the late broadcaster, Stuart Robinson, Content Director at Downtown Radio, remarked: "Candy was a household name on radio in Northern Ireland having been with Downtown from launch in 1976 right through until her retirement in 2013." He continued with high praise, saying, "Candy was a great broadcaster and communicator and was an inspiration to many aspiring broadcasters coming up through the radio industry." He also shared his personal sentiment: "Having grown up listening to Candy, it was a great honour to work with her at Downtown", reports Belfast Live.
