The Spanish women's team have made history by winning the World Cup for the first time. Spain's squad secured a final 1-0 victory over England women's team at the FIFA World Cup final in Sydney on Sunday, August 20.
Captain Olga Caromna's goal sealed the victory, leaving the Lionesses and fans devastated, despite still achieving a best-ever second-place finish.
However Spain's journey to the winner podium wasn't easy, with 15 players staging a mutiny over their treatment less than 12 months ago.The row between players and coach Jorge Vilda which broke out in September 2022, threatened to derail the win.The ladies addressed the Federacion Espanola de Futbol claiming that their "emotional state" and "health" were not properly looked after.
What is Vilda’s background? The 42-year-old is steeped in football having grown up watching his father Angel – currently head of women’s football at the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) – working as a physical trainer for among others, Luis Aragones at Atletico Madrid, Johan Cruyff at Barcelona and Jupp Heynckes at Real Madrid.
