Selfless West Lothian gran sleeps out in freezing conditions for charity despite double hip op

A selfless West Lothian gran who is recovering from a double hip replacement braved freezing temperatures in just a sleeping bag to raise money for a lifeline mental health charity.Helen Stockdale braved the elements last weekend to sleep outside, with around 100 others, to raise money for the Steps to Hope charity, which helps people experiencing homelessness and addiction.They were joined by Scottish singer Callum Beattie, who has been sleeping rough around Scotland to highlight the charity’s great work.Helen (55), from Pumpherston, said taking part in the The Sleep Rough event was a challenge given her condition, but worth it to raise awareness of Steps to Hope.She said: “I have something called osteopenia which affects all my joints and calcium, so my teeth also.“I have fractures over 40 times because of it.

My skull, funny bone and knee caps are just a few.“I had my double hip replacement seven months ago and healing well.“I did struggle sleeping on my sides during the sleep rough so was on my back all night.“I discovered Steps to Hope during lockdown and have been an avid follower ever since.

My husband Scott and I did a winter BBQ in November and raised £500.”Helen, who has six grandchildren and works at St John’s hospital, continued: “The cold was easier while walking around chatting with everyone but once in my sleeping back it was freezing .“I slept for about 40mins the full night.

I had four layers on.“Having Callum Beattie there was tremendous. He engaged with every singer person, chatting and getting pictures taken.“He entertained us to around 2.15 am and he was also freezing, especially his hands.“I raised £930 in total which I find splendiferous and I am so thankful to all my sponsors from friends and
