A mum is encouraging parents to take first aid courses after her toddler suffered third degree burns when he grabbed her hair straighteners.

Mum-of-four Debbie Miller was getting ready the day ahead at home when she turned her back for a 'split second'. In that short amount of time, her 14-month-old son Billy grabbed hold of her straighteners while they were still turned on and boiling hot, Lancs Live reports.

Debbie, 34, recalled Billy not making a sound at first as he looked up at her with 'his eyes wide'. After she realised he had burnt himself, the mum, from Preston, Lancashire, rushed him into the bathroom. Join our WhatsApp Top Stories and Breaking News group by clicking this link. She said: "To be honest, we panicked.

We didn't really know the correct first aid, so we just ran his hand under the cold tap for a few minutes and then wrapped it up, panicked and drove him off to the hospital." Debbie said she was in a state of sheer panic, but acted quickly to get Billy to Royal Preston Hospital's A&E Department, not far from their home.
