Parts of Scotland are set to be battered by gale force winds in the last few days of January with guts of up 75mph sweeping through the country.

According to the Met Office, winds will begin to pick up on Sunday with the most exposed parts of northern Scotland expected to bear the brunt of the blustery weather. There is also a chance of rain at the end of the weekend before strong winds arrive in other parts of Scotland on Monday and get progressively worse until Tuesday night.Unpredictable weather means temperatures are also set to fall a little due to low-pressure causing the strong winds and showers, while there will also be periods of sunshine.

Alex Burkill of the Met Office told the Scottish Sun: "There’s a fair bit of uncertainty at present but gusts of 75mph, perhaps even stronger, seem likely, peaking through Tuesday evening and the start of the night. “At the moment the strongest winds look set to be north of the central belt with the Outer Hebrides at risk first, then moving eastwards/southeastwards across the north of Scotland. “It’s the low currently in the middle of the Atlantic that will move northwards towards Iceland and then close to Scotland, bringing the strong winds on Tuesday.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here.
