Plan to remove memorials from Ayr crematorium branded 'absolutely disgusting'

Plans to remove memorials and memorabilia from Masonhill Crematorium in Ayr have been outlined by South Ayrshire Council.A noticed has recently been posted on site warning mourners that any "unauthorised" memorials will be removed from next week.Unless collected beforehand, memorials will be removed from Monday, August 5 and stored safely so that they can be collected.The notice reads: "We will be removing any unauthorised memorials and memorabilia from week commencing August 5."We would kindly ask that you remove any items before this date."Any items remaining will be removed and safely stored and can be collected during working office hours."If you require any information regarding memorials, please contact the main office in person or telephone 01292 266 051."A number of people have taken to Facebook to complain with the decision branded "absolutely disgusting" by one and "cruel" by another.Some were worried the move could affect the Children's Tree at Masonhill however, it is not clear what would constitute an "unauthorised memorial".A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We understand the importance of having memorial space for families.

Families can lease a memorial tree, shrub, rose or bench, or purchase a stone memorial, enabling them to have a space in which they can place tributes. “However, memorials are also being placed outside designated areas.

It has become difficult to maintain the gardens to the high standard that the public expect and we are therefore asking families to collect these items.“We have completed the building of a Memorial for Babies, which will soon be officially opened by the Ayrshire Baby Loss Support Group.
