The Northern Lights could be visible across parts of northern England tonight (April 17), according to forecasters. The Met Office has predicted mostly clear skies over the UK tonight, which will increase the chances of areas further up north catching a glimpse of the stunning light display, also known as the aurora borealis.
The weather agency highlighted that the aurora will most likely be visible in Scotland as well as Northern Ireland and parts of northern England.
The Northern Lights are the result of particles from the sun being carried on solar winds and then interacting with the Earth's atmosphere after being channelled to the polar regions by the planet's magnetic field.
According to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, different gases have different effects on the colour of the light display, which often appears as green, pink or purple.
