Nell Mescal has addressed nepotism accusations regarding her musical career and opened up about the rumours about her brother Paul. The Irish singer-songwriter released her debut EP ‘Can I Miss It For A Minute?’ back in May and sat down with The Independent to discuss the creation of it.

During her chat with the publication, she discussed the nepotism accusations she has dealt with regarding her musical career following the massive success of her brother, actor Paul Mescal.“I was already a musician when [Paul got famous],” she said. “I don’t want it to seem like I’m salty about it, because I understand from an outsider’s perspective, they’re seeing one person get famous and [another] person figuring out what they’re doing.”Prior to the success her brother received with the BBC’s adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People, Nell had left Ireland and moved to London to focus on her music career, playing shows and working on growing her audience.

Paul has in the meantime become an A-list celebrity who is now set to portray the role of Lucius Verus in Gladiator II.“Especially now, with this EP, I hope that anyone who thinks that that’s the only reason I’m doing it, listens and realises that I don’t just want to be here for a TikTok moment or whatever,” Nell said, adding “I want to be doing this when I’m like, 70, until I actually can’t do it anymore.”The ‘Crush’ singer shared that the nepotism accusations would make more sense if her brother was a musician as well but shared that the acting industry is “so separate – I don’t think people realise just how far apart music and film are.
