Met Office issues snow and ice warning for Scotland tonight as cold winter blast hits

Scotland will be hit by snow and ice tonight with the Met Office issuing a weather warning. As temperatures plunge below freezing this week, snowfall is expected to hit parts of the country and there is now a yellow alert in place from the Met Office.Flurries are expected in the northeast Scotland and the Scottish Borders, with up to 5cm of snowfall on higher ground and 1-3cm in lower areas.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place on Tuesday, November 28, at 11am until Wednesday, November 29 at 5pm.Scots are being warned of possible injuries from ice as well as dangerous driving conditions and public transport is likely to be affected with longer journey times predicted.For Tuesday, Met Office weather maps show early morning showers developing into the white stuff as the day goes on.

Scottish temperatures will remain between 2-4C, with the coldest seen over Glasgow and surrounding areas.Freezing conditions are the result of a plume of arctic air travelling from the north, with the national forecaster stating that snowfall could reach both lower and higher ground.

It comes as Scots brace for the mercury to freeze with temperatures to plummet as low as -8C this week.Speaking on Tuesday's forecast, meteorologist Alex Deakin said: "A frosty start for some today, more widespread frosts to come in the next few mornings and a possibility of a bit of snow in places as well."Today it'll mostly be rain showers but increasingly the showers over northeast Scotland will start to have some sleet and snow mixed in, especially by this evening and yes even down to low levels."It comes after forecasters reported a low pressure area moving from the south and clashing with cold air could bring a "fairly wide" snowfall in the
