Martin Lewis urges people to check for Council Tax discounts before new April bill starts

Martin Lewis is urging households up and down the country to check if they are eligible for a Council Tax discount before the new financial year begins on April 6.

While Council Tax band evaluations differ in Scotland, England and Wales, the various ways to qualify for a discount are mostly the same.The award-winning money expert and co-host, Angelica Bell, presented the final episode of the current series of The Martin Lewis Money Show Live from Liverpool, focusing on helping people in the audience and at home save money ahead of the new financial year starting on April 6.Council Tax bills for 2023/24 have now been issued, but certain groups of people may not be aware they could be due a hefty discount and possible refund, which could help to offset soaring food prices and the upcoming rise to energy bills - due to the loss of he £66/£67 monthly rebate which ends this month.

Martin shared success stories of three couples who had been in the wrong Council Tax band for years and all received more than £7,300 each in refunds.

But he also explained how single people, students, carers and disabled people may be eligible for a discount. He explained: “The other way to cut on Council Tax is there are discounts, the big one is the single person discount if you live alone or if you live with children or full time students.
